I think we all forgeting the most omportant factor influencing the planted tank........ What fish do you keep? That is the detingishing factor. If you a bigginer and can achieve a atunning planted tank with ghe fish you have, you have a chance if you have fish that will not allow tanks like forecamwe Deeiks, you can never enter in thesame class,,, tjats qhets thenihheT probl is

@MariaS - I think your comment calls for a new thread so this can be discussed. I have won a few planted tanks, but basically have random fish. So what is the correct fish for a planted tank?

Some good idea's, I think this definitely warrants a separate thread for discussion. Who's gonna start it? :)

    Hi all,

Let's get the ball rolling and bring our discussion regarding the tank of the month competition here.

Not sure if a mod would like to split and merge the other thread with this one? @Cheetah @Zebra Pleco

Cool beans. I must be honest, im not sure if this can work but I genuinely think that by splitting or grading the competition that it would give more members the impetus to enter their tanks..
If I recall the initial idea was to categorise the entries I.E. Biotope, aqua scape, single species, etc.. the confusion was regarding the "beginner" category and how this would be policed, this may require some brainstorming..
The other issue of course is prizes and sponsors, I personally (and I think this goes for most of us) don't really care too much for the prize, I would imagine that your peers voting your tank best would be prize enough? perhaps im mad ?
The winners of all categories then go into the TOTM maybe and the grand winner gets the prize ?

    I dunno....

I agree that the comps need a facelift. The amount of entries vs the amount of fish+tanks+cameras+members out there is proof of this. I'm of the opinion that having more categories will not generate more participation. Yes, maybe the handful of masters that have held back, so as not to hurt our novice feelings, will now have a category to post in. Will that make such a big diffs? The big guns are typically never totally satisfied with their tanks anyway:) and more often than not, they'll only enter it into a comp when it's absolutely perfect. The idea of further dividing up already poor participation into even more types of tanks doesn't make sense to me.

IMO one needs to identify the real reason that people aren't posting pics in the comps and in general actually. I can only speak for myself, so let's get everyone's gripes out in the open:). My reservations are with the "verification pic". Usually the idea to post in the comps strikes me while I'm browsing instead of working (like now). 10/10 times there is no verification possibility available.

My second moan is that there are already too many categories to enter in and vote in. And then another set of pages for results... Honestly... I usually just go to the comps if I'm bored and there isn't anything else interesting on TASA. I would eagerly open the comp page if it was exciting and I didn't know what to expect. I say, make one category for everyone and everything. No categories, no verification, no chit-chat, just pics.

How is that so? There is one category for fish and one for tanks? That's it. Can't really get simpler than that. Or am I missing your point?

    1000% agree on that one.

    Yeah, need more brainstorming.

I think an awesome comp idea would be to get points for breeding fish . Rear fish get higher points and the end of the year the guy with the most points wins ? Or some sort of breading comp the guppies draw alot of attention on the form

just trying to find ways of creating more interest in the comps. Most guys have one or two tanks that they may enter up to once a year, seldom more often than that. It's hard to get great fish pics, so guys with photography experience will always walk the fish category of they care to enter. I may be wrong, but my thinking is that if there are no categories, people won't feel out of their depth, as they can enter anything that they get a great pic of... A plant.. A snail.. Reflections on water... Frogs... Ponds... Fish... Tanks... Whatever. I'm just trying to think out of the box and get the ball rolling on ideas for the comps. Come on guys and gals...

How about themed monthly comps. We make a schedule of a few categories. And rotate them say over a 4 month period?

I think MASA had a great comp back in the day. Photos were submitted for voting monthly, then printed in a calendar at the end of the year. It was probably a logistical nightmare to put together, but created a very high standard of pictures. Sponsors could be asked to front the printing costs and then given calendars to sell in their outlets or give to their customers?
