Hi all. Maybe I am imagining it but it seems that there are more and more whole tarantula collections up for sale in Gauteng. Does anybody know why it is happening or is it just coincidence and nothing else? I am considering getting into that hobby also.Thanks.

It's a lot of beginners that stock up on tarantulas when they just start, after a few months or years when the novelty wears off they sell. I would advise anyone new the tarantula hobby to take things slow with one tarantula and make sure it's really something you like instead of buying every species you can get and have the same thing happen.

Also a few years ago a lot of people thought that there is lots of money to be made in the hobby (500 slings at up to r2000 a pop at the time gives you an idea), but the market gets saturated rather quickly and prices dropped like mad. Those same R2000 tarantulas are now going for R400.

I think that covers the main reasons.

I agree with you there @Ko7Ad also there are a lot of rubbish politics going on. But it is a great hobby and you meet some wonderful people. Tarantula prices have dropped significantly in the last few years. I also recently scaled down my collection from about 90 to around 25. Main reason being I don't have the time because I also started focusing on my fish.

Thanks. It is the rubbish politics that I am afraid of?? Another worry is the probable addiction to the hobby. I heard that it is rather addictive.

Hahaha all hobbies can be addictive and have their share of politics. Don't let that put you off.

The hobby is very addictive and had to get rid off all my T's due to my wife having arachnophobia it was sad to let go off them. Tarantulas has a lot more politics but just avoid discussion's that are related to it. As specially black listed species. You can go to Index of / and read through some discussion's
