tetra breeding

hi i was just wondering if any members here have bred any kind of tetra.

 

I haven't successfully 'Bred' them, but my silver tips used to spawn regularly in my display tank! Never moved them though to try and actually breed them.

I'd be interested to know if someone has though?

ja they're such a beautiful facet of fishkeeping im sure just about all of us would like a big shoal of any kind of tetra or barb for that matter swimming like the sardine run in one of our tanks now imagine if you grew that shoal yourself.from what iv read their not the most easiest fish to breed but surely there must be a not so difficult one

 

I believe one of our fello forum members who I shall not name in case they do not want their name mentioned, has a good few Nematobrycon Lacortei (Rainbow Emperor) and has the intention of breeding those?

So, lets keep our fingers crossed?

I think the difficulty depends on the species? The biggest difficulty is raising the fry and keeping eggs from being eaten? I've even seen an 'egg scatterer' drop eggs, and eat them as they fell! Most tetras require darkness, or rather a blacked out tank, in order to be comfortable laying. Marbles act as great egg protectors, allowing the eggs to fall to the bottom of the tank, whilst keeping the parents away from them. Not sure if any tetras will lay in spawning mops? I'm sure some must, but those eggs would easily be gobbled unless removed regularly?

It would be awesome though to raise a batch or ten!!

If it were a little easier, I'd look at raising Hyphessobrycon loretoensis (loreto tetra) or more so Hyphessobrycon Nigricinctus (Peru Emperor Tetra)... Pic below....

It would also appear that the above pictured 'Peru Emperor' is also called the Imperial Tetra? But I cannot confirm this, as information is quite sparce so far! I think I looked into getting these, and remember they were pretty costly at around R80 per fish! Bit too much for me for a tetra!

My blue emporor tetras looked very close to these. Same red on fins but they had that blue hue to them and the boddy almost a little more tan colour.

 

Blue Emperors? Red Fins? I've always known Blue Emperors to be Inpaichthys Kerri or Kerri Tetras? Never seen any significant red in their fins though?

I'm definately more a fan of Nematobrycon Palmeri (True Emperor Tetra) than the Kerri's, I found that the people who had Kerri's that I know, had aggression issues, and the colouration wasn't as stunning as the Palmeri. But thats just my Humble Opinion!

Congos are also one of the tetras I'd love to get good stock of, but every Congo I've seen has been really poor quality and around R50 to R70 a fish! Not spending that at my LFS when the next day it'll most likely be dead, or killed the other occupants from some weird disease!!

So @oscar freak, are you looking to breed any your slef, or just interested?

Here are some pics. Not the best but you can see them. Depending on mood and angle you few them at they would turn this shimmering purple/blue.

Yip, they are defo Inpaichthys Kerri. I can see the red you are talking about in the fins, but I've never seen that colouration myself. I'm guessing this is only visible on the males? Or do both have, but the males more visible?

Any how, we are getting slightly off topic here, so to get back to the point.... Has anyone tried breeding any tetras?

i dont mind,those are some nice fish.i'm after starting a small shoal of something and would be nice if they bred as well so was just wondering which of the tetra species would maybe surprise me with a spawn if i was lucky.

 

Oscar freak, I've had success with standard Emperors spawning two generations, just follow usual guidelines for egg-scatterers such as fine-leaved plants/spawning mops, use a small group of them, feed them up nicely on good quality live/frozen foods and remove the parents after spawning, following with infusoria and baby brine shrimp. The hardest part is rearing the fry and having enough tank space for them; getting the parents to breed is the easy part.

Glad to see you guys remember me ^^ Been super busy in University, and actually still have lots of work, was missing talking about fish

Shovelnose and the Arowana are both very healthy, but I have to make a plan about giving them a better home; unfortunately I am unable to upgrade tank size like originally planned and I don't want them to get stunted. I'll be making a post about this at the start of vacs, when I have time.

@Big G, unfortunately though my Emperors are in good shape, they haven't bred recently, and the current generation is only a small shoal of 6; I bred them before I was even on TASA, but if I have any further spawning behaviour and luck with rearing I will gladly advertise them here.

Oscar freak, have you got any ideas of what you'll be trying to keep?

bred black neons before... like others said it was pretty easy to get them to actually spawn (get the PH, temp, gH and kH of the water all good and it'll be no probs) it's raising the fry...
I managed to siphon a bunch out and due to insufficient funds i fed them crushed up Tetra Prima... got about 20 to a decent size...
not much more satisfying to me than getting fish breeding cause you know they gotta be happy
Just do a lil research on what ever species you wanna breed and if you have the params right you should be all good!

 

Lost my first batch of silver tip tetra fry as I was unsure how long they took to come out of the egg, they came out a little earlier than expoected and i didn't have food ready for them, however they spawned again last night, this time it's all systems go. Next weekednd they should spawn again, I'll let you know...
