    @Ryno

    Hier is die specs op die globe. Dink jy ek is veronderstel om altwee die switches aan te sit? Dat die een dalk iets doen wat ek nie kan "sien" as ek dit aanskakel nie?

    Yes, @Ryno has been a great help!

    I think I will have to rethink the decor in my tank a bit. I've done such a good / bad job of providing hiding spaces that I don't see much of my fish!

    I've calculated the light to be 0.9 lumen per liter, which in theory should be enough. Pity theory doesn't always work out! Lol!

    Spoke to Dory Pets yesterday, looking at between R1 500 and R1 800 for a light. It will have to wait a while!

    Will I be able to add that ferts mixture to the tank with my Cory in it?

    Yeah I also think your lights will be fine with your plants, you dont really have high light plants.

    Yeah EI dosing is fishy safe.

    How long have you had your plants in your tank?

    @Ryno

    Tx, will go and have a look.

    Got the stuff from Dischem.

    Ps: There's a lot of gunk in my water. I notice when doing water changes and it rises to the surface. Any ideas?

    Quick Update

    IMG_4951.jpgIMG_4952.jpgIMG_4953.jpgIMG_4954.jpg

    The new tank is coming along slowly but surely. Getting some new plants today from @FishLover and can hardly wait to see what I can add and change.

    My anubias and java took a hit but are showing new leaves. The ludvigia rupens are seriously growing and starting to get some colour. The other plants are still not in their submersed form...tick tock, tick tock...

    My rasbora has settled in and are happily grazing on the algae and chasing each other about. My handy little helpers (cory) are cleaning up nicely and entertaining me with their synchronized swimming. My sunburst platy are still a bit shy but are coming out a lot more often now. It strange to me that they are shy. The platy in my other tank shows off like crazy if I just glance in their direction!

    Any suggestions for changes / additions will be welcomed!

    A change is as good as a holiday....

    I received my plants from FishLover and went to work...

    I created a bit more open space in the front. Worked out well, I'm seeing my fish a bit more so I take it that they like it. Planted Hemianthus micranthemoides in the front. Hoping to make a carpet out of them :wondering: Will have to see how that pans out.

    Added excel again, major glancing from the fish. I take it they are very sensitive to the stuff. Will see if it helps halving the doses. Thinking about switching over to the EI method, finally had some quiet time to read it properly.

    Haven't seen my Borneo after fiddling around, hope he's still with me.

    All and all only time will tell if I had any method to my madness today.

    Will post some pictures as soon as things start happening. Tick tock, tick tock!

    Some help needed Please

    Morning,

    I am not overly happy with my tank. Something seems to be amiss. Clear water is certainly one thing.

    I have a lot of whitish gunk in the water. Added a Biochemical Sponge filter this morning. Hope it will help. Advice?

    I also have some brown algae growing on the tank walls. Plants are coming along although the growth seems less this week than last.

    Dinky, if the brown algae on the tank walls is little brown dots, then its diatoms, and there's no need to worry. Its standard in a new tank, and will go away after a few weeks, just wait it out.

    Your sponge filter is unlikely to remove the "white gunk" - sponge filters are primarily biofilters, not mechanical. Is there a way of upping your mechanical filtration for a short period?

    @tracyp

    Tracy, what would upping my mechanical filtration entail? Do I just need to add another hang on filter?

    I'm still very clueless but learning something new and useful each day!

    Yes, an extra hob would help - but for instant help, wrap batting or filter floss around your existing hob intake, that should help remove particles from the water quickly.

    If you add an extra hob, do the same thing on the intake too. You can remove the batting to rinse it out if it looks clogged up, then return it. It doesn't look fabulous, but it will help with mechanically removing the troublesome solids.

    And don't worry, we all had to learn - just yesterday I was laughing to myself about what experience teaches you - one of my filters started playing funny games - some years ago on a Sunday (it always happens on sunday!!!) I squeaked for help here for a similar problem. Yesterday - I calmly pulled it apart, id'd the problem, removed and cleaned the impellor and within ten minutes had the problem solved. But that's only because I'd dealt with similar issues before...

    @tracyp

    Tracy, thank you very much for the advice.

    Batting is packed away somewhere in the storage room - definitely not going that way. I don't have filter floss but will get some tomorrow. I've improvised for now and hope it will help.

    I took some of the tank water and filtered it through a new pair of stockings. Came out practically without any visible particles. I compared it to a glass full of the water that comes out of the filter and there was at least a 99% improvement.

    I then cut the sponge in my filter in two, filled the bottom with Seachem Matrix and put the two sponges, back to back, on top. I covered the one sponge that sits closest to the outlet with stocking.

    Now, big question, is the stocking safe for the fish? It's made of 85% Nylon and 15% Elastine.
