I would not have cut that glass if I were you............ Keep in mind that somewhere along the line you absolutely WILL have to get that huge tank that you then will NEED. If the glass is 10 mill then you are going to have to cough serious dough to replace. When filling do yourself a favour and keep it absolutely level and before even attempting to fill buy youself ten tubes of aquarium silicone and redo the whole tank also brace it properly. Just my 2 cents.
That will take a few months  as our local stores only get about one tube of aquarium sealant every few months. Would standard silicone work that doesn't have fungicides? All in due time I suppose, at least if he's happy with the offer then this tank can take as long as needed to get up and running again
You need marine silicone for fish tanks. But can't you get them in Bloem? You need to offer much lower to get the Price for R500, i.e. explain how bad condition the tank is in, etc. and offer like R400. If he is like he wants more, then say meet in the middle and call it R500 :cheesy:
R500 if the tank holds water well. clean the stand up, check for damage, weld a couple of stays on it. get a polystyrene bottom for movement. Clean everything out, fill it with water. add a substrate, put in a pump. let it run for 2 weeks. add 10 cheap fish to test the water out. done. new tank that you can set up, sell it for 3k!
@blackgnat That sounds like a great plan. I'll probably put in some darkish river sand with some rocks thrown in. I was thinking the whole day how exactly to aquascape it if everything holds out
Ok the tank is old .You need to redo all silicone - use a thin steel wire to cut the seams apart there is a good chance you going to break a panel as the glass is old and settled already .Look at the silicone bead, is it hard and white if so you need to redo the whole tank if its still soft and fairly clear its good to go ,the filter compartment is not that serious as it only carries the volume/weight of the filter not the tanks volume and its a pain to get apart with out breaking something , get a decent wood base , thick Styrofoam on that them add tank DO NOT SILICONE STYROFOAM TO TANK BASE just rest it on .Marine silicone is the only stuff too use everything else has a algaecide or some other chemical in it . To clean the glass meth on a paper towel , to remove sediment/scale build up on glass you can use a diluted acid mix with water or even vinegar use an old credit card to scrape the glass clean once full most scratches will disappear [till your first algea starts growing ].The internal filter compartment is great its old fashioned but its been around for 60 odd years and it works brilliantly fill some compartments with SIPOREX ,SPONGE,GRAVEL you can run it off a air stone it you want as water is same level in filter as the tanks , remember the bigger the turn over of water the bigger carry capacity the filter will have . R500 is a fair price just work slowly and carefully if you break a side or front the glass alone will be more than R500
