Valid points are being made both ways. I just honestly think that they sometimes push things to the extreme with no other valid reasons aside from the fact that they are "able" to do so!

Take Jacaranda Trees as an example.

But as for shrimp, I guess the question would be, could they evolve and learn to adapt to our systems, and if so, what would the impact of that adaptation be? A bit hard to predict.

But then again, of what use are these legislation if developers and mining companies are allowed to destroy everything in their path anyway?

    Oivey....

FW shrimps can very well survive in our fresh water streams. Possibly not in Gauteng or Free state, but certainly in many fresh water bodies in the northern province and in certain areas of KZN where the climate is a lot more tropical.

The issue is not if they will survive, if they will destroy a habitat, or if they will even be eaten or not.

South Africa has indigenous species of shrimps... These are endangered already, and are most certainly illegal to catch or keep.

Introduction of non-indigenous species will result in unnecessary competition for food, and most certainly cross breeding, as shrimps easily cross breed.

Thus our natural South African indigenous species will slowly be wiped out.

So I am going to be WILDLY controversial here... I am in total support of the shrimp remaining blacklisted, if they are a threat to our natural indigenous habitat.

Let me help here, only some species can cross breed, not all species and genus can cross breed I speak under correction, but we only have 1 genus in SA. Most spesies will not be able to cross breed with our genus, 1 of those being the Amano shrimp, allong with crystals and many others. @Zoom this is why I ssy they need to take all that into consideration before just BL all shrimp. During winter in zululand waer drops well below 20 degrees, the more sofisticated sd pecies will not just stop breeding but also die.

So if the right species r brought in they will not effect our species and they will def not die out! And with a heafty price tag no 1 will release their gems

I don't think it makes any difference whether we agree with the legislation and the reasons behind behind it. Unfortunately we can't pick which laws we obey. However Hennie, if you do get the law changed, we'll be grateful. ... Unless it causes irreparable damage to our local waterways - then we'll have to take our gratitude back :p

Ok so its only 2genus in SA and cant inbreed with each other. And no genus can x breed with ours, so we can remove that opsticle.

Hi all very interesting thread we got going on. It was said before, many LFS are carrying stock of shrimp and I am sure they have sold hundreds or thousands by now. I stand corrected, has this caused a problem in our fresh water systems yet?

Has there been any evidence what so ever Suggesting that bl shrimp have been found in our waters? If so then my point is invalid however I am yet to see an article that says bl shrimp that came from the LFS have invaded a river.

I agree with many others here when they say homework was not done when putting this bl together.

One last question should guppies mollies and platies not be on the BL? Lol they breed like hell and I am sure could live in some of our waters.

    My 3c...

Arguing about whether its right or wrong is like trying to chop a tree down with a fish. Who cares? What matters is that people are looking into it.

The blacklist was drawn up as it stands because of environmental factors. Obviously. We are not scientists, well, most of us anyway. We have not done the environmental risk assessments. We don't physically know the potential impact these creatures will have on our environment if they were to be released. But, someone out there has, or is busy doing the assessments. So, someone is working on it. These things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

We all want to see shrimp come off the black list. Hell, I'd give my big toe to see that happen. They banned all freshwater inverts because of the potential destructive capabilities of freshwater crayfish and those lobster things. Why anyone would want those things is utterly beyond me, but some people like weird stuff. One mans taste, is another mans rubbish.

As far as I understand, it looks like there will be some concessions made with regards to shrimp, but I cannot confirm that as of yet.

I agree with some of the comments about shrimp being very sensitive. They are. Small amounts of heavy metals in the water will kill them, and quickly too. Copper especially. Cherries are quite hardy though, and as far as I understand, our local shrimp are a different form of cherries, which may interbreed. I stand to be corrected on that.

But crs, Amano shrimp, Sulawesi shrimp, etc will not easily survive the colder regions of the country.

I really hope they legalize the little buggers! I want a King Kong shrimp!! Google it! Saw one in Japan for R4000 in a store last year.

Hi @Sean J nice meeting you on Saturday, ive seen the king kong shrimp, and yes I want 2, not just 1....but about the big toe issue, I would love to see them come off the BL, but I`d like to keep my big toe, we will gladly donate yours .
Beer is on me, the day the start leagelizing...they can keep the lobsters on the BL for all I care. And lets hope they build Rome a bit quicker this time, then they did a couple of houndreds of years ago!

@jsplayn yes they are advertised on gumtree, junkmail etc. but obviously Illegally, they are obviously coming thru customs as well...and although on the BL someone is pulling a blind eye to this.

If they leagelize some species, there would be better control on those that relly shouldnt get thru customs, they are actually doing more harm in BL all the species then only just BL some!

Here in Durban our rivers have tons of glass shrimp which people catch and sell to lfs and years back when I wasn't on this forum and didn't know shrimp are illegal to keep I took home a lot about 100 put some in my 500 liter pond and some in a 2ft tank with java moss. They all died in about 2yrs or so. My point is if the local ones didn't breed in captivity I doubt the imported ones will. However in the wild the water current plus plant life is different so maybe the imported ones will breed in our rivers and if salt is needed near river mouths should work imo and btw I will love to have Amano shrimp in my planted tank.

not that my opinion is worth very much but ive finally read this thread all the way through, some very interesting opinions...and also some surprising ones from people i didnt expect.

supply and demand...whats not worth it to you is definitely worth it for someone else. the R1000+ regardless of your or my opinion...someone will pay that price...or the price would be cheaper

    and st@tic said

"if the local ones didnt breed in captivity, i doubt the imported ones will"

yes they really really do. give them food and a nice ecosystem and a threat free habitat...they breed more then rabbits...they breed like shrimp!... if ever they were in the natural waterways in large enough numbers, i believe they would thrive

im impartial, i see valid points from both sides of arguements - i think most hobbyists have the common sense and knowledge to research and control their live-stock responsibly and shouldnt be restricted from looking after these facinating creatures. And on the flipside....blacklist is blacklist and no amount of "it was published in july and theres no shimp on the list blah blah blah" is going to get shrimp green-lit for regular hobbying.

i dont think it will ever be legal to own crustaceans... its a pipe dream. People then need to choose what path they take and be responsible with their aquatic hobbying. i'll leave it at that
