    @zaqwsx15 I do think there is a possibility that someday, we might have a couple of species, that will come of the black list. We will keep on hoping for that day!

    Morning All,

    I was very happy to discover that our indigenous freshwater shrimp is alive and well, breeding in our river systems.
    We caught about 15 and they were fully grown males and females with eggs.there were also some juvies.
    All were released back into their habitat.
    Unfortunately I am not going to divulge where, but rest assured that they are well cared after by the necessary organisation.

    Hi all. Blacklists exist for a reason I am the caretaker of a very large piece of land with a lot of game I love shrimp don't get me wrong hence my name and if given a opportunity will keep them(sorry if this upsets someone but that is just my feeling).I feel that I am responsible enough to look after them and to get rid of them in a way that will not be detrimental to our own eco system. In the same breath I will however add that we as responsible people have the "capitalists" to thank for our current problem. When I was a young boy there was a very large number of so called bass farms that sprang up all over and now most of our dams is overflowing with them this is a detriment to our native small mouth yellow fish as they kill them off. In the freestate we never had mamba guess what I almost got entangled with one not four months ago. Most everyone does not believe me saying that it was a common house snake. But if it was then this particular one had a very uncomfortable "coffin shape" to its head I believe they came to the region via reptile collectors that let them go in the veldt and this happened due to the fact that it is illegal to keep venomous snake in the freestate region and when the said people apply for permits to keep exotic species they get rid of these "local invaders" cause fauna and flora will pay you a visit to see if you can look after a species that has to be registered. I also went to the trouble of speaking to some very knowledgeable people and they informed me because of the rapid environmental changes reptiles and other animals will migrate out of their traditional areas into "new areas". The long and the short to this story ladies and gentlemen is that as long as we have people that run after uniqueness and profit all of us will suffer as unique often mean work and time there is a lot of individuals that will get tired of their pets and then mess the whole experience up for the rest of us. I say think looooong and hard and if you are willing to take the chance and 2000000000000000% sure that you will not impact on our own eco system keep what you want and keep your mouth shut about it. If you can then no longer take care of said animals euthanize them it sounds cruel but it is unfortunately the only way. We should remember further more that as aquarists we play an important role in conservation in some cases and also we make sure that by breeding our own stock nothing gets caught in nature where we can damage and destroy complete ecosystems by taking away one only species a whole food chain can go down the tubes.

    @Shrimp lover Ditto.

    Same as keeping any other pet. it is your responsibility to apply control. Be it culling off excess shrimp in an humane way or picking up your dog's poop on the beach. it quite simple.

    With aquariums, you never ever ever EVER, WC into an open drain, toilet/basin (NEVER EVER), Water your plants, and if you don't have plants, get some (for those of you how are living in high rise apartments) match your WC volume with enough plants. Hell grow tomatoes/herbs in doors with your fishy poop water. that stuff is like plant steroids. All it takes is a few eggs/hatchlings to escape.

    Of late I feel that everytime someone just dumps the "OMG its blacklisted" line in the forums a flame war ensues or no further discussion continues. this doesn't just go for shrimp however. Show me proof of these things, learn about it, by doing proper research first before you just textually dump your limited knowledge because you read it elsewhere on the forum. I have learnt soooo much in the short time I've been active on the forum. Mostly from doing research myself, but being driven by people looking for answers. I promote this forum where ever i go, because i have found a home where people (mostly) love giving advice and assistance to those who ask for it. to give an example for this. Someone posted about obtaining a Terminalia catappa tree either here or on the other forum, AKA Indian Almond or tropical almond. These are only "noem name" for this species. Of course someone dropped the blacklisted line without reading up a little bit more. Triplaris americana, is also known as the Indian Almond or Ant tree, this species is the Blacklisted tree. All i'm saying is read, learn then contribute.

    Rant mode off....

    We have a thriving indigenous shrimp population in a few of our municipal reserve dams in Durban... incidentally we also caught a massive Pacu that someone had obviously released in one particular dam. We also have Southern Mouth Brooders, Red breast Tilapia and Mozambique Tilapia which frequent the same dams and utilise the shrimps as a principle food source. Other interesting things found was one of the indigenous terrapins (not the red eared slider which is also a common find) in a small nature reserve in a developed suburb.

    Point of my post is that, due to known hybridisation between shrimp species and a lack of knowledge on the consequences of this cross breeding, it is important that the importation of shrimps (and other crustaceans) is controlled to limit impacts on a very important food source for our indigenous fish, birds and other animals.

    I was recently at the KZN Conservation Symposium and one of the presentations indicated they had found invasive red claw crayfish in the Pongola and other Northern KZN rivers.

    Unfortunately for responsible fish keepers, the majority of people who purchase these invasive species do not know the negative impacts of releasing them into streams when they get too big/eat all their other fish etc. etc. Hence the need for a ban to limit this happening.

    Thought I'd chime in again. Went to some stores in the week past and asked around a bit. A very large number of them members of the pet traders association and they have all got glass shrimp and got it from legal sources. Wont say I got some and also wont say I didn't.

    I'm a "government employee" (some of us work quite hard btw) who works in an environmental division... not looking to bust anyone though, just thought I'd chip in as to the reasoning behind the black listing.

    Enforcement are more interested in nailing the lfs and suppliers, as opposed to the consumer.

    Jo I am also employed by the government and spending 8-10 hours per day in the very hot freestate sun performing manual labour such as moving stones chasing poachers, keeping the largest shooting range in the southern hemisphere clean and serviceable and also doing general maintenance on buildings, and instalations all the while moving by foot constitutes hard work wont you say?Legal as in it comes through the channels that they order and hence as the people they buy from gets inspected for keeping illegal stuff yes legal then I would suppose. Yet again I said that I will not acknowledge having some and neither will I not acknowledge it. I do however think that it is rather premature to blacklist animals without the proper studies having been done.
