I feed my oscars a mix of food. They are in a tank full of similar sized fish.

They get makeral and herring on alternate weeks.
They get a mix of floating and sinking pellets (3mm and 6mm) once a week. The sizes change as I keep 6 different sizes.
Wardley, Tetra Min and Tetra Min Crisp flake foods once a week.
You are right about the veggies some eat them some don't. I do give the tank Duckweed, peas, canteloupe (spunspeck), banana, grapes, carrots etc at intervals
I am actually directing it more to my Osphronemus but a few of the oscars gobble it up.
Also when available they get smelts or silversides but never more than once a week.
I keep a lot of other cichlids in the tank so there is a lot of breeding and the oscars get their share of the fry at various size stages.
I use a 30" bead filter on the tank and lots of water changes.

Btw I was at one of David B's speaking gigs on the nearly 100% water changes and sat beside him while listening to several other speakers over that weekend. All I can say is that we can all do different levels of water changes and have equally good results. I would never do that radical amount to any of my fish. David is a great guy and I have had the pleasure of knowing him for many years. He lives on a farm in New York state with some of his children (He is a prolific breeder and has eleven of them).

Whoa, Corne, a 3 foot or even a 4 foot tank won't be a good idea for 4 oscars!

Bear in mind that they'll each attain a size of 20-30cm, and to top it off, like to have some space to themselves. You can do one of two things here - buy a tank in excess of 600 litres so you can comfortably house 4 oscars, or return two or three of the oscars to the pet store (or sell/trade them off), and get a 4 foot for those that remain.

In any other case, I see this ending badly for an oscar or two. :(

I was wondering what oscars do we have available here in S.A, I have heard there are even Lemon Oscars, do we have them? I have only seen reds, Tigers and albinos.
Also I was wondering are there any breeders of oscars or are most of them imported?

I would like to keep oscars again and maybe breed them but I am wondering if there is any demand for them or will I struggle to get rid of babies?
Thanks to anyone that might have some answers to my questions.

    Cheers!
