I was reading Franna's thread when I suddenly got wondering - who else here has somehow mananaged to get their boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife to get into fishkeeping?

On my side, I've found it to be impossible. My one ex-girlfriend eventually gave into the idea but never stuck with the hobby for long...

My current girlfriend thinks I'm an absolute nut (which is fair enough). She has no idea why anyone would want so many fish, nor how a person could spend so much cash on them... *groan*... will they ever understand?

Maybe I'm just stuck with the non-fish-friendly ones. Has anyone else had much luck?

My wife don't keep fish but likes them. She would once in a while feed them and such. She loves the rams because they would bite your finger if you put it in the tank becasue they want food.

She would put het finger in the tank, laugh and then appologize for not having food to give them. :)

I got my gf onto fishkeeping, she had more tanks than me at one point (until I caught up, it was an assault on my fishyness). She's on this forum actually, as Whisper...

I got Kattz into the hobby within a year of meeting her. My first words to her ever were "I like tropical fish."

    BEST PICKUP LINE EVER.

Just joking, but yes, I had success with recruitment into the hobby. Two of my friends also started fishkeeping as a direct result of me keeping but both eventually stopped unfortunately.

I some of you guys are just lucky I guess.

And you're just super fortunate. I acclimatize my females slowly, only breaking the bad news to them about 2 weeks to a month into the relationship...

Gareth somehow rubbed off on me with the fish-keeping hobby...
Although I think the only reason I started was to get the fish he never wanted to buy, like neons, and bettas, ext.

With enough fish talk Kelly(Kel-Sol) gave in and she is in love with her beta and is somewhere on the forum now. To be honest i think the thing that will either sway a person to this hobby is the first fish, if you want the other half to "give in" a neon/guppy/danio wont cut it imo, a fish with tons of personality and good looks:) will win them over. i think betas are abs stunning first fish they will literally become pets the longer you keep them and the low maintenance is a definate plus. Well thats my 2c and well i do speak from experience :)

it will be funny as to what some of the wifes have to say ?

'you spend 250 rand on fish food but can't take me to dinner! '. . and then the fight started !

lol im sure most married men have to bribe their wives for fishy stuff

    cheers

Haha the betta can literally do tricks:) Kelly and I are in the process of teaching/training our bettas to do tricks just to name a few following the finger the basis of all the tricks, feeding from a finger in the water, jumping out the water to get a piece of food of the finger(this is an awesome trick they pull their body in or wind it up to jump - just make sure that its done in the middle of the tank and not close to the side) and swimming through a hoop the hardest trick to do of the above mentioned will be keeping an eye open on the net to see what else can be taught. Just get her a 1ft or 1.5ft and set it up for her pop in a heater a sponge/corner filter and there u go the bettas are such low maintenance and feeding time is the most fun time to be with them. Solly Kellys betta goes crazy when she enters her room and he follows her in the tank as she move around. So brads a think the betta would be a great idea just let her chose the little guy and he will grow on her. And if u hav to do the odd gravel vac getting her hooked is worth it:)
