    Hi my fellow fish keepers.

Has anybody seen these hard workers recently, I am struggling to find some.

Please if anyone does some lfs crawling over the weekend and you see these SAE then inform me about it.

I seriously need a few of them to keep my algae in control, don't have lots of it but I do get some algae now and then.

I don't mind driving to Randburg or wherever just as long as it is in the East rand or central Gauteng even PTA is fine.

    Got company petrol card

    Thanks everyone.

Can contact @Moolis from Pet Stop, believe he will be able to assist you, saw it on his stock list the other day and he can ship/send it to you if you can't pick-up from him.

They will go well with the barbs, but just be aware, they get to around 10cm within a matter of months, and once they get hooked on fishfood / pellets, they no longer eat algea all day... My 4 are stunning, but eat flakes / granules from the surface (and are well over 10cm too).

    @cheekychops and @
richardnuss thanks for the info will phone Jungle aquatics to find out if they are the real ones. That is my fear I dont want them to only eat flakes and pellets. They must do their work and must chow the algae.

SAE seem to be very rare. I managed to get 4 last year December and since then have only seen them once. Ottos seem to be just as rare down here. You guys apparantly have a breeder in JHB so shouldn't be too dificult to get some.

Yeah the seem to be very rare, I phoned a few lfs and all three of our sponsors and they dont have stock. Petstop SA has got 3 adult ones but I am afraid they might not eat algae anymore, I heard they become very lazy with time. What about a bn pleco? Just need something to get rid of the algae I have from time to time.

BN's will eat algae but it's not their only food so they will help but don't expect them to keep your tank clean. Get a cleanup crew of bottom feeders - Corydoras (which you have already have - not sure how many), ottocinclus (6-12 of them), SAE (6 when you can get), snails (if you don't mind them) an ancistrus or two and shrimp (when they become legal ) although they could be food for your fish.

What type of algae are we talking about?

When I top up my fish tank with green water (TM) from my planted setup my Otos go on a feeding spree.
    Stomachs also close to bursting!

Brown diatom should go away on it's own.

Do you have a glass cleaner?

Yes I do but I also got some greenish type algae sure they will eat it.

How long does it take to go away? I believe this always happens with new planted tanks?

I think when my plants take up all the nutrients in the tank then their wont be any for the algae to grow:laugh:

I dont have hectic diatom algae, just need to clean the glass once or twice a week. just here and their. It is just a mission cleaning such a big tank with a glass cleaner got one of those Marina ones with the white sponge. I will save up some money LOL to buy those magnetic algae pads for my tank they are around R350 each, dont want a small one it will take even longer.
