Hi Tetra. Do you say that excel kills the Vallis? I have a huge amount in my tank (started with 10 and it just spread!) But I use excel and I have noticed that the edges of the plants are black... I have a feeling that it is snails. What could cause this?

Excel is the worst enemy of vallis and crypts

Excel wont kill vallis and certainly not crypts , it would merely melt vallis away once you start using it. Excel's active ingredient is glutaraldehyde which vallis has to adapt to, so when they melt away, don't pull the roots or runners, let them settle...the plant will bounce back stronger than ever and take over your tank.

Same with crypts, they have to settle to new water parameters. Which is why Oliver Knott cuts off all the leaves of his crypts when he scapes a tank, stating that it's useless for them to waste energy on leaves that wont recover...he'd rather use 100% of the plants energy to sprout new leaves.

Black tips on top of the leaves that are dying is from damage at cellular level when cutting/trimming them. Cut the tall leaves off at the base of the plant. ..there will always be shorter stems/leaves anyway. This will promote new growth, make the plant bushier, healthier and will avoid the damaged ends.

PS. Remember...apart from apple snails that should NEVER be in a tank with plants...as they eat plants, something like ramshorn snails will only eat decaying plant matter, reason you'll notice them on the top of your vallis isn't because they eating your plants. It might look like they do, but they actually eating the dead matter as outlined above

    Hope that helps :blink1:

Thanks so much Smurf! I think they adapted in the first week because we have had to remove about 20 plants already due to space issues as the Vallis has covered my tank! I will start trimming from the base now and see how that helps out :)

Again, thanks so much for the help! I really appreciate it.
