If they want to chase let them, if it makes them feel part of something there's no harm. There's consequences to that too though, they won't be taken seriously in the end.

He who posts little and often is just a little fish.

I barely post here anymore anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

So Joe Blogs is posting...eh, just ignore him, he's trying to increase his post count.
That then just takes away from the value of the Forum?

Top posts aren't even a third of what they were 2 months ago, would help boost activity...

Not if everyone is having a good time and the conversation is uplifting. I honestly never even looked at my post count till last week when this thread came up. I think we are over analyzing this. This is the internet and you know how some humans can be.

If it's a troll on the other hand or someone that's just rude for the sake of it I agree with you fully and you can go slaughter them in the back yard, I'll even dig the hole and clean up the mess afterwards.

Quite honestly.. I think there are two sides or scenarios to this whole story ie: the number of posts each one has and their meaning.

As things work now, its very difficult to separate the two.
I don't even know if it is possible to separate
I hope this comes out the way I actually mean it

1- Some people look at the high number of posts as simply a means of boosting activity and irrespective of whether they are of informational value or just chatting away nonsense, people welcome the high volume of posts as I said, purely from a boosting forum activity point of view
We need to remember that too much useless chatting does devaluate the forum despite increasing activity. which is more important?
If I just read chit chat in post after post but nothing that can actually help me.. will I continue searching that forum?

2- Some people look at the number of posts and feel that it should relate to the knowledge that that person has contributed to the forum.

If we looking at boosting activity in a positive way... some food for thought here..
Personally I find that there is a lack of interest or support shown across the board in some instances..
In other words... often the same people post on the same thread as a matter of routine.. maybe because its the type of fish they also like, maybe because its a planted tank and they into planted tanks.. maybe because they like the OP or whatever the reason might be but... totally ignore any other post that might be different, unusual...
often there is no enthusiasm or interest shown when something different from the run of the mill is posted.... no curiosity.. no questions..
If I see something nice or interesting, I appreciate it, ask questions.. I like to know about it even if its just to strengthen my general knowledge
If we can encourage that, it increases activity and documented sharing of knowledge ie: questions and answers which I see as a positive way of boosting activity

If you trying to measure someone's knowledge ... I dont think there is a tool to do that with at the moment
All you can do is browse the forum... read through posts and decide for yourself who you can see always contributes sensible knowledge and advice
At this point in time... the number of posts people have against their name means nothing to me.... and I cant see that this will ever change
There are very knowledgeable members on the forum that don't have a high post count and there are some with fairly high post counts that are majority pure run of the mill chit chat

Unless there was some very state of the art program that can evaluate the contents of a post, the number of posts doesn't really mean much... in my mind...

At this point, I think we need to strive to keep a balance between everything

Yeah well while that's true, people such as the professor have left the forum because people thought they knew better than those who are qualified. Not really anyone here has qualifications or has kept what I've kept and knows a lot about them. I never really look for info here, and don't dish it out as much either. Nobody is interested and the mods already have posted the best answer everywhere and I can't be bothered to debate really, I obviously don't know enough. I'm learning a lot more through one person in Private than I am on here, I've even shared some of the knowledge....

What this forum needs is more discussion topics, not more lekka beeg tanks, rays, aros or sales threads. While they add to the forum it's not expanding heavily on the fundamentals... And I feel that people just aren't interested, they'd rather do their own thing without having proper knowledge on it.

This is what worries me. I have posted several threads in search of info and i end up with one reply giving me the same general info I already found on Google. no more in dept discussion to help some understand the science behind fish keeping this is the most disappointing thing about TASA at the moment. What happened to the healthy debating that use to occur here on TASA. Lately when someone disagrees with one another they simply fight to protect their point of few than talk through the facts until figured out which is the best method to get where you wan to go. I think that in it's self is a very sad fact

No one knows it all.. we all learn every day.
Very sad to see when people blame everyone else and don't look in the mirror
I don't know or ever met the "professor' yet of late it looks he is my/our judge all the time..
I don't know him and have no interest in being involved in past stories but I feel its uncalled for to fall back on what sounds like a 'God' to keep posting the comments you do
Everything you have a problem with, you quote the professor...

Sad attitude this is.. whilst we need more topics we don't need your negative arrogant attitude running down people with big tanks or oddball fish
We saying they worth nothing and we don't really need them I guess??
Or are we just a little bitter?????..... because.... that really wasn't a nice thing to say
That attitude is the reason why the majority of the people with awesome huge setups have their own whatsapp groups and don't bother to post or share much here..
I have tried hard to change that but... ja

    @Hendre,

I am posting this as a mod, and a member.

You're enthusiastic. Can't criticize that. Nice to see some youngsters
But you have a lot to learn.

I have been keeping fish for over 35 years.
That's what? Double the period of time you have been on this planet
Cheetah has been keeping fish for over 40 years.
MariaS...Don't know the exact number, but seems like she has a fair amount of experience.

There are a good few other knowledgeable members here too. I won't mention them by name.

And yourself? A year maybe 2?

Over the course of the 35 years I have kept anything and everything.
Starting with Guppies, common tropicals (and bred a few species), Rift Cichlids, Discus, South and Central American Cichlids, Oddballs including (5 species of Poly & 4 species of Knife fish).
I do have a fair bit of experience.

And yes, I now have a big tank and I keep Rays.
So yes, I want to discuss my Rays with other people who keep them.

I have never done a planted tank nor am I very good at diy. You may have noticed I don't post much on those sections. I could go and ask on other Forums and then come back here and dish out the answers as if it was my own knowledge. But that isn't my style

    And finally
Hendre, you and a few others have made a lot of complaints about the mods. Some downright rude comments about a certain admin member.
Well, no one is forcing you to be here. If you don't like it...........

He was @Dirk and I speak to him a lot because he is a PhD in biochemistry amongst other things. He has the qualifications to back it up, and has been keeping fish in Germany (land of fish gods) and SA for 50 years. More history than most I'd say.

I'm just stating that's all that's going on here at the moment. Big tanks and oddball fish are awesome, but there's just not the discussion depth or variety on here.

I've been learning a lot, but unfortunately not from here. Fair points.

May as well stick to my own little world of fishkeeping stupidity then. If I'm truly so bad.

Maria knows where I lurk more often, and post more too. I'm just another one of the people losing interest in this forum

Now to go hide in the planted section

Do you guys think I'll get advice on my CRS here, not a chance, and shooting down a 15 year old, not just on this thread but for the past few months, real classy. Yes they have attitude and can be rude and also have role models, but instead of giving guidance he just got picked on and shot down. Every time he said something the trigger was pulled, sometimes twice and that's why posts are decreasing and moving over to a more private platform. Like I said before, mods must stay neutral, but no, not here.

    Ok heres my 2c.

Ive know people keeping discus for 25 years. And catch on complete otracaties. But they have been in the game so long their word is gospel... Rubish.

Prof dirk will always be mentioned. He is well respected but i see him as a very oppionatated indevidual.

Ive seen it so often. Various generations of tasa staff ganging up on members.

And saying if you dont like it here... Leave???

Just remember we are the people who keep this forum going no matter how many posts.

Dont pretend u doing us favours
