In the big tanks of 200L and more I have never found the need to add any kind of chemicals of this type. The dilution of the remainig water with the fresh water takes of that. Also by mixing in the hot water, the temp does not have to be 100%, I just make sure especially in winter that I dont drop more than 2.5c.

Also by adding the hot water from the geyser, the heating effect on the water by the geyser usually also burns of most chlorine in the water.

On the smaller tanks 100 liters and less I have gotten into a routine of filling up 20L buckets with warm or hot water and the letting them stand for 24 hours to dechlorinate. Then I do only 20 to 30% water change on these tanks. My kill rate has now gone down to zero. At first on the smaller tanks I was doing 40 to 50% water change with plain tap water straight from the tap and always seemed to have one or 2 fatal causalities after a day or so. Since the above method I have had non.

To be honest I have never been a fan of the dechlorinate stuff you het in bottles eapecially addidng it in with fish. I feel it can do more harm. Especially on smaller tanks.

I personally think at the end of the day it comes down to want scientists refer to as dilution, dilution, dilution!!!

My concern is not with Chlorine but rather chloramine. Chlorine can be gassed of rather easily.

Chloramine however will remain in tap water for an extended period of time and requires a chemical or carbon treatment of the water to effectively remove it. In order to remove it, the chloramine must be deconstructed into its basic parts, chlorine and ammonia, with each part being treated to remove them.

"If desired, chloramine and ammonia can be completely removed from the water by boiling; however, it will take 20 minutes of gentle boil to do that. Just a short boilof water to prepare tea or coffee removed about 30% of chloramine. Conversely, chlorine was not as consistently removed by boiling in SFPUC tests."

 

Mmm....so straight from tap or not? Watching this one.

You can, depending on water quality, ph swing etc. Dose prime or alpha to the tank according to total tank volume then fill up from a mixer tap with a mix of warm and cold water to get as close to the temp as you can, or use a bucket.

You can double dose prime safely.

Yes I did and many other products as well, be sure to choose the Mail Direct Delivery option its about R40 bucks and it gets delivered via courier, not the PO and your parcel usually arrives within 10 days.

 

Also been using tap water for years, never had an issue in the bigger tanks!! Also not into chemical and water additives and don't fully trust them. Worst case scenario add some coarse salt.

 

@f-fish That is an absolutely awesome tank setup. I love the plants you have in their, you must have green fingers, growing and maintaining plants like that cannot be easy. Love the fact that you have snails in their as well. What type are they? How beneficial do you find them to be to the overall eco system of the tank and how do you control their numbers? I ask as I have just also started snails in my guppy tank, but I am starting to get a little nervous now as the population has really started to take off.

 

Hello everyone, this is all very informative.
I have a question, when i went and bought all my stuff for my tank, the guy who helped me gave me a small bottle of stability. It's the bacteria to add to tanks and he said to use it for my WC. Would you guys recommend using it every time you do a water change? And could it affect green water caused by algae?

 

Once your tank is established you shouldn't need to use Stability at every WC. Its useful during the early stages of a tank that is building up beneficial bacteria. These days I only use it during large 50%+ water changes - as I recently had to do while treating a dreaded callamanus parasite infection.
I feel its a good product to have on hand.
