"Canon 100mm F2.8 IS USM macro lens." Yeah that is awesome ... love to hear how the MR14-EX does once you fit it to the 100mm .. been shooting with no flash and the 100mm and fish shots are OK but not great.

portraits - people or fishcial expression?

I'm planning on switching over from Sony to canon . . . . the quality on the sony is not that grand. . .

If you getting into macro photography . . just get extension tubes .

Does anyone have any thoughts about the Nikon L110. Seems like a nice camera and was wondering if it is worthwhile getting.

don't have one - but for under R2k it seems good - what you want to use it for primarily?

Fish, Plants and just general outings that I find interesting such as the beach.
It's either the Nikon L110 or the Fuji Finepix S1800

hmmm ... the 18x optical zoom would swing me in favor of the Finepix, since they both run off 4 AA's I suppose you should look at number of shots vs battery life.

Finepix does not have the HDMI out so playing your content means removing the CARD ... neither are Full HD (1080p)

even on http://snapsort.com/compare/Fujifilm_FinePix_S1800-vs-Nikon_Coolpix_L110 they seem similar so the only thing to do is to go and feel and play with both - look at the menu, construction and general feel of each.

    Good Luck

I "upgraded" from my "mik and drik " recently to a "canon sx30is"
The zoom sold it for me and for only R3 500 ... - its 4x digital zoom if i remeber correctly

for a ameture like me its pretty cool, now i just have to figure out what all the buttons do :)

You mean it is the 35x optical zoom that sold it for you ?

"digital zoom" is absolute rubbish. It's basically just like resizing a pic bigger on your pc, but worse quality...

Optical zoom is good, but the figures like "18X" etc aren't meaningful. What actually determines the "zoom" you see is focal length.
When they show the figure for optical zoom they take the ratio of the minimum focal length of the lens to the maximum focal length of the lens. ie. A 18-55mm lens is 55:18 = 55/18 = 3x "zoom". A 70-200mm lens is 200/70 = 2.85x zoom. Obviously a 70-200mm lens lets you zoom a lot further than a 18-55mm lens. A 500mm lens is 500/500 = 1x zoom but sees waaaay further than a 200mm...

Always best to compare like for like and the "standard" for comparing is for a 35mm sensor/spool.
ie. for the FZ-28 dpreview.com lists
Also remember on any crop sensor camera you have a sensor smaller than 35mm (known as full frame with digital) you have a "crop factor" which makes your lenses "zoom" because you're capturing a smaller part of what the lens "sees". With nikon this is 1.5 and canon 1.6 so a 70-200mm on non full frame nikon camera is actually 105-300mm.

    Anyway lecture over :p

Well went shopping with parents and decided on the Fuji Finepix S1800 because of the "zoom" and it had an "evf" eyepiece thingy which the Nikon didn't.
    Thanks for all the info.
Really confused with all the settings though. Going to take me a while to get used to it!

Thanks Rory - that explains a bit (the part i understood anyway) so my cannon is 24-840mm - so its the 840 mm is what counts and makes the zoom so cool .
now i just have to get to grip with the rest (aperture/shutter speed etc)
for now the automatic function button will have to do
