Hi All, In month or two I will be relocating to SA - Pretoria from India. I'm not new to the hobby as I've been keeping fishes (a lot of them) from last 10 years. I've had Tanganyikan fishes recently which I sold them off because of the movement to SA. I'm really looking forward to keep Tangs or Malawis as I will be moving more closer to the lakes I'll be moving to Pretoria in Nov end. I would like to hear from all your expert people on various shops/dealers/home breeders to get me started with the african cichlid passion again. Looking for more information on getting wild caught fishes as well. Not that I am not interested in F1s or F5s Regards, Adesh
Hi & Welcome. Hope you enjoy your time here with all of us fish nuts. Great petshop in the Pretoria area is Pet Stop. They keep a wide range of fish, including the real oddball now and again.
Thanks Skye. Waiting for more details on its location and what they usually have. Do they have tangs readily available?
If they don't have they can source for you. They are located more in the north of PTA not in the heart of town, thank goodness. When you are ready, also ask on the forum because there are some breeders here that are more than willing to sell some of their babies off to good homes.
Welcome to SA and to our forum. We hope to see you set up soon and a couple of pictures of your tanks.
Thanks for warm welcome. One can get a fair idea on how my 2 tanganiyakan setup were from these pics -> https://picasaweb.google.com/115364772300218762884/TangSetup The first pic has won 2nd prize in Monthly contest conducted by "indian aquarium hobbyist" portal; which is a very well known portal in india. I will not be able to have similar sized tank in SA. I'm planning to bring in my 2x2x1.5 (ft) tanks (2 nos) with me. But really would have loved to keep at least 4x2x2(ft) tank. Comments are welcome for the link.
Welcome to TASA and South Africa! Stunning tanks! If you click on the Sponsor's tab at the top of the page you will see the link to Petstop. You can start emailing them or posting a thread in their section on the sponsors forum to discuss what you want and will need and they will help you out!
Hi and Welcome, very nice tank, any idea how much that rock weighed? reason im asking is im busy with a 2meter 700L tank similar in size i think to yours, and not sure how much rock i can stick in there, im looking at building a rock structure for an underwater sand waterfall. if im not mistake my base glass is 12mm
Thanks for the overwhelming response and grand welcome. Thanks Khalid/Wyvren/Enver/Ammar for liking my tank. Ammar, those rocks are laterite rocks and really very light as compared to other rocks e.g. limestones etc. I had collected them from the shore area which has this eye catching color. Another work around for you is to do DIY rock background there are so many ways to go about. You can see the one which I have built - indianaquariumhobbyist.com Another DIY 3D background in making This is time consuming activity. Or the one which is very fast to build and ready to go in tank - 80 gallon tank + DIY bacground - (heavy pictures) Cichlid-Forum
@adesh8028 If you don't mind me asking what brings you to our shores, I take it it's work related? Regards Jason
Welcome Adesh, you have definately found the right forum and I'm sure you will have fun with the hobby in SA. I can only recommend shops in JHB, I havent been to any PTA ones, I think I must start though.
hi and welcome one of the sponsors for the site is in Centurion,Pretoria/tswane and they are amazing some LFS are not that good i was at a major one over the weekend and would seriously not buy from them as there were so many sick and dead fish in the tanks
